Creating Loyalty Tiers
Learn how to create and manage VIP tiers that reward your most loyal customers with exclusive benefits, better earning rates, and special perks.
Overview
Loyalty tiers create a progression system that encourages repeat purchases and long-term engagement. Customers advance through tiers by accumulating points, completing orders, or receiving invitations.
What Are Loyalty Tiers?
Tiers are membership levels with escalating benefits. As customers reach higher tiers, they unlock:
- Better point earning rates - Earn more points per dollar spent
- Better redemption rates - Get more value when spending points
- Exclusive rewards - Access special promotions and products
- Enhanced perks - Higher scan rewards, review bonuses, referral benefits
Common Tier Structures
| Structure | Example Tiers | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| 3-Tier System | Bronze → Silver → Gold | Simple, easy to understand |
| 4-Tier System | Member → Silver → Gold → Platinum | Balanced progression |
| 5-Tier System | Entry → Bronze → Silver → Gold → VIP | Detailed progression with elite level |
| Invite-Only Top Tier | Member → Gold → Platinum (invite) | Exclusive VIP experience |
Prerequisites
Before creating tiers, ensure you have:
✅ Enabled loyalty program - In Loyalty → Settings ✅ Configured base point earning - Default earning rates ✅ Created rewards (optional) - Promotions for tier completion rewards ✅ Planned tier structure - Number of tiers and thresholds
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Navigate to Loyalty Tiers
- Log in to the Batch Admin Dashboard
- URL:
https://account.batchsys.com
- URL:
- Click Loyalty in the left sidebar
- Select Tiers
- Click the + Create Tier button (top right)
Step 2: Configure Tier Information
The tier creation form is divided into two sections: Information and Rewards. Start with the Information section.
1. What is the name of your tier?
Enter a descriptive tier name that customers will see:
| Tier Level | Common Names | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Entry Tier | Member, Bronze, Starter | "Bronze Member" |
| Mid Tier | Silver, Gold, Preferred | "Silver VIP" |
| Top Tier | Platinum, Diamond, Elite | "Platinum Elite" |
| Exclusive | VIP, Black Card, Founder | "VIP Insider" |
Best Practices:
- Use names that convey status and achievement
- Keep consistent naming convention across tiers
- Avoid overly complex or confusing names
- Consider your brand voice (casual vs premium)
2. What is the threshold range for this tier?
Define the minimum and maximum values customers need to qualify for this tier.
| Field | Description | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Start Range | Minimum value to enter tier | 0 (Entry), 100 (Silver), 500 (Gold) |
| End Range | Maximum value before next tier | 99, 499, 999 |
How Ranges Work:
Bronze Tier: 0 - 99 points
Silver Tier: 100 - 499 points
Gold Tier: 500 - 999 points
Platinum Tier: 1000 - 999999 points (effectively unlimited)Important Notes:
- First tier always starts at 0
- End range must be greater than start range
- Ranges should not overlap or have gaps
- Use high number (999999) for unlimited top tier
Example Tier Structure:
Entry Tier: 0 - 100 points
Silver Tier: 101 - 500 points
Gold Tier: 501 - 1500 points
Platinum Tier: 1501 - 999999 points3. What is the threshold type?
Choose what metric determines tier qualification:
| Threshold Type | Measures | Best For | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Current Point Balance | Points currently in account | Encouraging point accumulation | Silver at 500 current points |
| Overall Points Earned | Total points earned lifetime | Rewarding long-term loyalty | Gold at 2000 total earned |
| Orders Completed | Number of orders placed | Rewarding purchase frequency | Platinum at 25 orders |
Threshold Type Comparison:
Current Point Balance:
- Customers can drop down tiers if they spend points
- Encourages saving points for tier benefits
- Creates dynamic tier movement
- Example: Customer has 600 points → Gold tier. Spends 300 points → Silver tier.
Overall Points Earned:
- Customers never drop down tiers (lifetime achievement)
- Rewards cumulative engagement
- More stable tier status
- Example: Customer earned 5000 points total → Platinum forever, even after spending.
Orders Completed:
- Based purely on purchase count
- Simpler to understand for customers
- Good for subscription or frequent purchase businesses
- Example: Customer places 10 orders → Silver tier automatically.
Recommended Threshold Type
Use Overall Points Earned for most programs. It rewards loyalty without punishing customers for redeeming points, and provides stable tier status.
4. Upload image for wallet (Optional)
Upload a visual badge customers see in their mobile wallet:
| Setting | Description | Recommended Specs |
|---|---|---|
| Wallet Image | Badge shown in customer's app wallet | Aspect Ratio: 1:1 (square), 500x500px minimum |
Best Practices:
- Use distinct colors for each tier (Bronze=brown, Silver=gray, Gold=gold, Platinum=white)
- Include tier name on the badge
- Keep design simple and recognizable at small sizes
- Match your brand aesthetic
- File formats: PNG with transparency preferred
5. Would you like this tier to be by invitation only?
Toggle: ON/OFF
Default: OFFControls whether customers can reach this tier through normal progression or require manual invitation.
When OFF (Normal Tier):
- Customers automatically enter when they reach threshold
- Standard tier progression
- Most tiers should use this setting
When ON (Invite-Only Tier):
- Customers cannot reach tier through points/orders alone
- Admin must manually invite customers
- Creates exclusivity for VIP program
- Referral programs will not work for this tier
Use Cases for Invite-Only:
- VIP tier for high-value customers
- Influencer/ambassador program
- Limited capacity exclusive tier
- Special employee or partner tier
Invite-Only and Referrals
When a tier is invite-only, referral programs for that tier are disabled. Use the "Overrule Invite" option in referral settings to bypass this if needed.
Step 3: Configure Earning & Redemption Rates
These settings control how customers earn and spend points within this tier.
6. How many points should a person earn per dollar spent?
Define the Point Earning Ratio (PER) - how many points customers earn per dollar spent.
Configuration:
| Field | Description | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Points Earned | Numerator of ratio | 1, 2, 3 |
| Dollar Spent | Denominator of ratio | 1 |
Formula: Points Earned / Dollar Spent = Point Earning Ratio
Examples:
Bronze Tier: 1 point / $1 spent = 1.0 ratio (1 point per dollar)
Silver Tier: 2 points / $1 spent = 2.0 ratio (2 points per dollar)
Gold Tier: 3 points / $1 spent = 3.0 ratio (3 points per dollar)
Platinum Tier: 5 points / $1 spent = 5.0 ratio (5 points per dollar)Advanced Ratios:
1.5 points per dollar: 3 points / $2 spent = 1.5 ratio
0.5 points per dollar: 1 point / $2 spent = 0.5 ratioBest Practices:
- Increase earning rate with each tier (1x → 2x → 3x → 5x)
- Keep ratios simple (whole numbers when possible)
- Consider your profit margins
- Typical range: 1-10 points per dollar
Calculating Customer Value:
If 100 points = $1 discount value, then:
- 1 point per dollar = 1% cashback equivalent
- 2 points per dollar = 2% cashback equivalent
- 5 points per dollar = 5% cashback equivalent
7. What is the point ratio when a customer converts points into dollar value?
Define the Point Spending Ratio (PSR) - how much discount customers get per point spent.
Configuration:
| Field | Description | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Dollar Redeem | Numerator (discount value) | 1 |
| Points Spent | Denominator (points required) | 100, 90, 75 |
Formula: Dollar Redeem / Points Spent = Point Spending Ratio
Examples:
Bronze Tier: $1 / 100 points = 0.01 ratio (100 points = $1 off)
Silver Tier: $1 / 90 points = 0.011 ratio (90 points = $1 off)
Gold Tier: $1 / 75 points = 0.013 ratio (75 points = $1 off)
Platinum Tier: $1 / 50 points = 0.02 ratio (50 points = $1 off)How This Works:
- Higher tiers require fewer points for same discount
- Creates incentive to reach higher tiers
- Platinum members get better "point value" than Bronze members
Complete Tier Economics Example:
Bronze Member:
- Earns: 1 point per $1 spent
- Redeems: 100 points for $1 off
- Effective cashback: 1% ($100 spent → 100 points → $1 back)
Platinum Member:
- Earns: 5 points per $1 spent
- Redeems: 50 points for $1 off
- Effective cashback: 10% ($100 spent → 500 points → $10 back)Best Practices:
- Improve redemption ratio at higher tiers
- Keep math simple for customers (100 points = $1 is easiest)
- Balance earning and redemption ratios to control costs
- Monitor redemption rates and adjust if needed
8. Would you like to offer more details about the tier? (Optional)
Add a rich-text description explaining tier benefits to customers. This appears in the customer app when viewing tier details.
What to Include:
- Tier benefits summary
- Earning rate
- Redemption rate
- Exclusive perks
- Requirements to reach tier
- Special features (early access, events, etc.)
Example Description:
Welcome to Gold Tier!
Benefits:
• Earn 3 points per dollar spent (3x earning rate)
• Redeem 75 points for $1 off (better value)
• 10% bonus points on product scans
• 50 bonus points per product review
• Priority customer support
• Exclusive Gold member promotions
Keep earning to reach Platinum tier at 1,500 points!Step 4: Configure Rewards & Bonuses
Click Next to proceed to the Rewards section, where you configure additional earning opportunities and tier completion rewards.
9. Scan reward details
Configure rewards customers earn when scanning product QR codes (product authentication).
Scan Reward Type:
| Type | Internal value | Calculation | When to Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Points | POINTS | Fixed scan_reward_value points | Simple, predictable per-scan reward |
| % Off Retail Price | PERCENT_OFF | scan_reward_value % × product retail price | Reward proportional to product value |
| % Off Point Value | PERCENT_OFF_POINTS | scan_reward_value % × product's redeem_point_value | Reward based on a product's configured point value |
Product override: For the Points and % Off Retail Price types, if a product has its own Redeem Point Value configured, that value overrides the tier calculation. For % Off Point Value, the product's Redeem Point Value is used as an input to the calculation (not an override).
Default Fallback: For % Off Point Value, set default_scan_reward_point as the fallback if a product has no Redeem Point Value configured.
Configuration:
- Select scan reward type from dropdown
- Enter the reward value (
scan_reward_value) - For % Off Point Value: also set a default fallback value
Examples by Tier:
Bronze: 5 points per scan (POINTS type)
Silver: 10 points per scan
Gold: 15 points per scan
Platinum: 20 points per scanBest Practices:
- Increase scan reward with tier level
- Use Points for simple programs; use % Off Point Value when products have varying point values
- Set product-level Redeem Point Values on premium products to give extra scan rewards
10. What is the point value per customer's review?
Enter points awarded when customers submit product reviews.
| Field | Value | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Review Reward Value | Points per review | 25, 50, 100 |
Examples by Tier:
Bronze: 25 points per review
Silver: 50 points per review
Gold: 75 points per review
Platinum: 100 points per reviewBest Practices:
- Reward reviews generously to encourage UGC (user-generated content)
- Increase reward at higher tiers
- Consider setting review limits to prevent abuse
- Typical range: 25-100 points per review
11. Allow rewards on scan
Toggle: ON/OFF
Default: ONControls whether scan rewards (configured in #9) are active for this tier.
When ON:
- Customers receive scan rewards when scanning products
- Scan reward type and value apply
When OFF:
- Product scans do not grant rewards
- Use for tiers where you want to disable scan bonuses
Typical Setting: ON for all tiers
12. Do you want to give points on each order completed?
Toggle: ON/OFF
Default: ONControls whether customers earn points based on order purchases (using the Point Earning Ratio from #6).
When ON:
- Customers earn points on every order based on amount spent
- Standard loyalty behavior
- Example: $100 order × 2 points/dollar = 200 points
When OFF:
- Customers do NOT earn points on purchases
- Use for special tiers where points come from other actions only
- Rare use case
Typical Setting: ON for all tiers
Disable Points on Order
Only turn this OFF for special promotional tiers where you want to grant benefits without purchase-based earning. Most tiers should have this ON.
13. Should the amount spent be pre-tax?
Toggle: ON/OFF
Default: ONControls whether points are calculated on pre-tax or post-tax order total.
When ON (Pre-Tax):
- Points calculated on subtotal before tax
- Example: $100 subtotal + $8 tax = points earned on $100
When OFF (Post-Tax):
- Points calculated on total after tax
- Example: $100 subtotal + $8 tax = points earned on $108
Tax Calculation Comparison:
Order: $100 subtotal, $8 tax, $108 total
Earning Rate: 2 points per dollar
Pre-Tax ON: $100 × 2 = 200 points
Pre-Tax OFF: $108 × 2 = 216 pointsRecommended Setting: ON (Pre-Tax)
Why Pre-Tax is Better:
- Consistent across different tax jurisdictions
- Simpler to communicate to customers
- Tax rates vary by location
- Industry standard for loyalty programs
14. Would you like this tier to have a referral program?
Toggle: ON/OFF
Default: OFFEnable referral rewards for this tier. When ON, customers in this tier can refer friends and earn points.
When OFF:
- No referral program for this tier
- Skip referral configuration

- Disabled if "Only Converted User" is ON: Limit is optional
Use Cases:
- Limited campaigns: Set cap at 5-10 referrals
- Ongoing programs: Unlimited referrals
- VIP tiers: Higher or unlimited caps
Over Rule Invite
Toggle: ON/OFF
Default: OFFAllows referral links to bypass invite-only tier restrictions.
When OFF:
- Invite-only tiers block referral access
- Standard behavior
When ON:
- Referral link grants access even if tier is invite-only
- Useful for exclusive tiers with selective referral access
Example Use Case:
Platinum Tier:
- Invite Only: ON
- Has Referral: ON
- Over Rule Invite: ON
Result: Only Platinum members can invite others, bypassing the invite-only restriction.Only Converted User
Toggle: ON/OFF
Default: OFFControls whether referral rewards require the referred user to make a purchase (conversion).
When OFF:
- Referrer earns points as soon as friend signs up
- Immediate reward
- Risk: Low-quality referrals (fake accounts)

Setting 3: Loyal Customer Referral
- Only Converted User: ON
- Order Count: 3
- Minimum Spend: $100
- Referrer gets 500 points after friend places 3 orders totaling $100+Best Practices:
- Use "Only Converted User: ON" to reduce fraud
- Require at least 1 order for quality referrals
- Set minimum spend above average order value
- Higher tiers can have stricter conversion requirements
15. How would you like to reward your customers when they complete tier?
Add optional rewards customers receive when reaching this tier. This creates a "tier achievement reward" moment.

| Duration | Days the booster is active (default: 7) | 7, 14, 30 |
How It Works:
- Creates an active
UserRewardrecord for the customer - While active, all points earned are multiplied by the booster value
- Example: 2x booster active → scan earns 10 pts → customer gets 20 pts instead
- Only one booster is active at a time (highest multiplier wins if multiple exist)
Example:
Silver Tier Achievement:
- Reward: 2x Point Booster for 14 days
- All scans and order points are doubled for 14 daysBest For: Driving engagement immediately after tier advancement

Tier Economics: Cost Management
Calculating Tier Costs
Understanding the economics of your tier structure helps manage profitability:
Bronze Tier Customer Lifecycle:
Customer spends: $1,000 over lifetime
Points earned: 1,000 points (1 point/$)
Point value: $1 / 100 points = $10 redemption value
Effective cost: 1% of revenuePlatinum Tier Customer Lifecycle:
Customer spends: $10,000 over lifetime
Points earned: 50,000 points (5 points/$)
Point value: $1 / 50 points = $1,000 redemption value
Effective cost: 10% of revenueKey Metrics to Monitor:
| Metric | Formula | Target |
|---|---|---|
| Redemption Rate | Points redeemed / Points earned | 60-80% |
| Liability | Outstanding points × redemption value | < 5% revenue |
| Breakage | Unredeemed expired points | 20-40% |
| Customer LTV Increase | Tier member LTV / Non-member LTV | 2-5x |

✅ Keep it simple:
- 3-4 tiers maximum
- Clear tier names
- Easy-to-understand benefits
✅ Progressive benefits:
- Each tier should be meaningfully better
- 1.5-2x improvement per tier level
- Make top tier feel exclusive and valuable
✅ Set achievable thresholds:
- Entry tier: Reach within 2-3 purchases
- Mid tier: Reach within 3-6 months of moderate activity
- Top tier: Aspirational but achievable (1-2 years)
Communication
✅ Promote tier benefits:
- Email announcements for new tiers
- In-app tier progress indicators
- Celebrate tier achievements with notifications
- Show "X points away from next tier"
✅ Educate customers:
- Explain earning and redemption rates clearly
- Provide tier comparison chart
- Highlight exclusive benefits
- Share success stories from top tier members
Optimization
✅ Monitor and adjust:
- Review tier economics monthly
- Adjust thresholds if distribution is skewed
- Enhance underutilized tier benefits
- Survey customers about desired rewards
✅ Test and iterate:
- A/B test tier thresholds with small groups
- Pilot new benefits before wide rollout
- Gather feedback from tier members
- Continuously improve based on data
