Points Management

Points are the running balance a customer accumulates. Campaigns decide what earns them, tiers read them to decide standing, and rewards spend them. This page covers the balance itself — how it is earned, held and spent.

What You Can Do With It

Decide what earns points

Points are awarded by campaigns, so "what earns points" is really "which campaign types you run". The engine recognises eighteen triggers, covering purchases, engagement and profile completion.

Config: create a campaign and set its type. See Creating a loyalty campaign for the mechanics; the full list of triggers is in the reference table below.

Let points decide a customer's tier

Tiers read the points balance to place customers. A tier threshold can be measured three ways, and the choice changes the behaviour significantly:

Threshold typeMeasuresEffect
pointsCurrent balanceSpending points can drop a customer's tier
points_earnedLifetime earnedSpending never costs a customer standing
ordersOrder countPoints are irrelevant to the tier

Config: set the level type when creating tiers. See Creating tiers.

points and points_earned behave very differently

With points, a customer who redeems a large reward can fall out of the tier that earned them the reward. With points_earned, standing only ever goes up. Pick deliberately — this is the single most consequential tier setting.

Let customers spend points

Points can be redeemed for rewards, and where the storefront allows it, applied against an order at checkout.

During checkout, points being spent are held rather than deducted, and released if the order does not complete. A balance can therefore look temporarily lower while an order is in progress; an abandoned order returns the points.

Trace a balance

Point movements are recorded as transactions, so a balance can be reconciled rather than taken on trust. This is the first place to look when a customer disputes their total.
