Age and ID Verification
Batch stores sell in regulated categories, so two separate checks can stand between a visitor and a completed order. They happen at different moments and do different jobs.
The age gate
Some stores show an age confirmation before any shopping happens. Until it is answered, the visitor does not reach the catalogue.
This is a declaration, not an identity check — it establishes that the visitor says they are old enough. It is the lighter of the two checks, and the one most shoppers will meet.
Identity documents at checkout
The heavier check happens during checkout, and only where the brand requires it. When it applies, Identification becomes its own step in the checkout, and the order cannot complete until it is satisfied.
Two document types can be asked for, separately or together:
- Government ID — a driver's licence, passport or equivalent
- Patient ID — a medical or patient card, where the store serves that market
What the check involves
Where a store asks for a document, the flow captures two things in sequence:
- The document itself — photographed or uploaded
- A photo of you — so the document can be matched to the person using it
The second step is why the flow asks for camera access. Both parts are needed; supplying the document alone does not finish the step.
Photograph it properly the first time
Flat surface, good light, no glare, all four corners inside the frame. Rejected images are the most common reason this step has to be repeated.
Reusing a document
Once a document is on file it belongs to the account, so returning shoppers are not asked to repeat the whole capture on every order. Documents expire, and a store can ask for a fresh one when the old one lapses. Keeping it current in the profile area is quicker than being stopped mid-checkout.
This is where orders stall
If a shopper reports that checkout will not finish and no error is obvious, the identification step is the first place to look — particularly a document that has passed its expiry date.
What shoppers should expect
- Not every store asks for a document. Many only use the age gate.
- Where it is asked for, it is mandatory, not skippable.
- The requirement is set per store, so a shopper cleared on one Batch store may still be asked on another.
