Cart and Checkout
What you can do with it
Build a cart
Items are added from product pages and listings with a chosen quantity. The cart is reachable from the header, and stores can open it as a drawer so shoppers can check it without leaving the page they are on.
Keep a cart between visits
For signed-in shoppers the cart is held against the account, so it survives closing the browser and follows them to another device.
Empty it
The whole cart can be cleared in one action, and bundles can be removed as a single unit rather than piece by piece.
Check out as a guest
Where a store allows it, shoppers can complete an order without an account. See Creating an account for the trade-offs.
How the checkout is built
Checkout is a stepped flow with a progress indicator. Steps are added only when the order needs them, which is why two shoppers on the same store can see different checkouts:
| Step | Included when |
|---|---|
| Contact / user details | Always |
| Identification | The store requires a government or patient ID |
| Delivery address | The method is delivery or shipment |
| Payment | The store has payment options enabled |
Completed steps stay clickable, so a shopper can go back and correct an earlier answer. Steps ahead of the current one cannot be jumped to.
Guest and registered checkouts differ slightly in the first step — a guest is asked for user details, a registered shopper for contact confirmation — but the later steps follow the same rules.
Rewards in the cart
Where a cart contains an item claimed as a prize or reward, the store checks at checkout that the item is still available to that shopper before letting the order proceed. Prize items can be finite, and two people can reach checkout holding the same one.
If the check fails, the shopper is told rather than charged, and offered the choice to clear the cart and try later. Being stopped here is the system working correctly, not an error.
